Research  /  Three areas, one goal

Useful quantum computing is a software problem.

Hardware gets the headlines. But a quantum computer is only as useful as the algorithms and tools that run on it. This is where we work.

A — Algorithms

Quantum algorithms

We focus on simulation of chemistry and materials, and on optimization. For each algorithm we publish a full resource estimate: how many qubits, how many gates, and how much error correction it needs.

That turns "someday" into a date range. It also shows hardware teams which improvements matter most.

Open questions
  • Which chemistry problems need the fewest logical qubits?
  • How much do better error rates shorten the timeline?
  • Where do classical methods stay ahead?

B — Software

Quantum software & compilers

Quantum programs fail in quiet ways. A wrong gate order or an unused qubit gives a plausible but wrong answer. We build type systems, compilers and test tools that catch these mistakes before a program reaches hardware.

Our tools target several hardware platforms, so code written today keeps working as machines change.

Open questions
  • Can a type checker prove a circuit uncomputes its scratch qubits?
  • How close can compiled circuits get to hand-tuned ones?

C — Applied

Applied research

We take one real problem from a partner and follow it all the way through: model, algorithm, compiled circuit and cost estimate. Then we compare it with the best classical method on the same data.

Sometimes the answer is that quantum does not help yet. We publish that too.

Open questions
  • Which industrial workloads cross the advantage line first?
  • What data has to be prepared before quantum methods can help?
